Tibial Hemimelia
We feel that the Shorthorn breed has a bright future in the cattle industry, and we are convinced that eliminating the genetic defect Tibial Hemimelia from the breed will help to make it even brighter. All of our herd has been tested for TH, and any carriers have been shipped. We will not use, purchase, or sell as breeding stock (whether for a purebred or commercial herd) any animal that has not been tested as TH Free.
Herd Health Program
Matlock Stock Farm utilizes a modified live vaccination protocol. Calves receive viral modified live vaccine in the spring for BVDV 1 + 2, IBR, PI3, and BRSV and a killed Clostridial 8-way with Hemophilus somnus. The calves are boosted in the fall with the same protocol. Calves also receive deworming with topical ivermectin at each vaccination. Replacement heifers receive a pre-breeding modified live viral vaccination for BVDV 1 + 2, IBR, PI3, and BRSV as well as leptospirosis. They are given 2 vaccinations against calf scours (E. Coli, Rota and Coronaviruses) pre-calving. The cow- herd also receives 1 pre-calving scour vaccination. The mature herd is dewormed with topical ivermectin in the fall.
All members of the herd receive regular health checks by veterinarians Dr. Don Driedger and Dr. Debra Haydock, particularly at semen testing and pregnancy diagnosis. Both veterinarians would be happy to answer any questions you may have about the herd health protocols used at Matlock Stock Farm.
